Basically what I'm trying to do is compare 2 strings one from a plist and one from the user's input. I use a while loop to step through each character and compare it and if true then I increase an integer then once the loop has finished I work out the percentage correct / similarity of the plist answer and the user's answer. I seem to be having a problem however as the only return I'm getting is 0. Below is the code I'm using...

If you want to compare individual characters, why not use characterAtIndex to fetch the characters? –  Hot Licks Nov 13 '12 at 12:52
    
If you look at the code at the top of the while loop you can see I've commented the code I was originally using, which was the 'characterAtIndex' however this didn't seem to work. –  Kolors Nov 13 '12 at 13:09
    
characterAtIndex will fetch individual characters, allowing you to compare them. Your problem lies somewhere else. –  Hot Licks Nov 13 '12 at 13:30
    
Keep in mind that if plistAnswer is shorter than boxAnswer your algorithm will go off the deep end. (And also remember that for characterAtIndex what you get back is a unichar, and you compare unichars with ==.) –  Hot Licks Nov 13 '12 at 13:34

(Hint: I'd bet that "charactersCorrect" and "totalChar" are both integers. If the first is, say, 15 and the second is 20, what do you get when you do the INTEGER division 15/20?) –  Hot Licks Nov 14 '12 at 0:25

The reason for your crash is because you do not check the length of both strings and are going out bounds. Below is a solutions that will work because it only loops over the number of characters contained in both strings, and any characters that are missing are considered incorrect.

As I mentioned it looks like your going out of bounds. One thing is you set characterRange = 1 but the character indexes are 0 based. The next issue is that you assume answerLength <= totalChar –  Joe Nov 13 '12 at 16:10
    
The fact that it's 1 shouldn't matter though, it would just compare the second character rather than the first. Also I know about the latter however that's not the problem here, for me it just crashes even when the 'answerLength' is <= 'totalChar'. –  Kolors Nov 13 '12 at 16:22
    
The fact is that since characterRange is 1 means it will start with the 2nd character but then end 1 past the last character, hence the out of bounds issue. –  Joe Nov 13 '12 at 16:24

Have you tried my example yet? You do not show all of variable declarations so there may be issues with that, also to print a % sign you need to use 2 (@"%i%%"). –  Joe Nov 13 '12 at 18:13
