# MySQL Average on a sum

Here is my problem:

I got a table like this one:

int id;
int time;
timestamp DATE;
int sid (FK to table Site);

and a table Site:

int id;
varchar title;
``````

In my log table, a site can be present 0 or N times, I need to get the sum of time for each site.

This request is done and seems to work, now I need to get the site title and the average of the sum time for a specific period in my logs.

Here is my query:

``````SELECT site, AVG(sumtime)
FROM (
SELECT Site.TITLE as site, SUM(time) as sumtime FROM Log
INNER JOIN sites ON Site.ID = Log.sid
WHERE Log.DATE between '2012-11-13' AND '2012-11-15'
GROUP BY Site.TITLE
) AS t1
GROUP BY t1.site;
``````

But the average seems to not be working in this case, the value i'm getting is a the sum i've computed in my subquery, any help?

What I need now is, an average on the time sum on a period (let's say 2012-11-13 to 2012-11-14 for this example), so as for the expected datas:

I suppose the only reason why an average is the same as the sum is when each group is exactly one row OR all sums are equal :) –  Ja͢ck Nov 15 '12 at 10:56
It's is a good point, now I need the average sumtime on a period, so... the group by Site.TITLE in the subquery seems to give an incorrect result. –  Tony Nov 15 '12 at 11:16

This does not make sense at all. Your subquery gets you one line per site title. The average of 1 value is the same value. You group by site title again in the outer query.

Please sort out first, what you really want to know. Maybe it makes more sense to compute the sum for each day and calculate the average for a week, or whatever. But (again), what you ask for is nonsense (sorry).

No problem. Was about to post the same query...but I would have used the DATE() function instead of DAYOFYEAR(), since it doesn't lead to wrong results when your date range covers multiple years. –  fancyPants Nov 15 '12 at 11:43

I solved my problem, found the good way to write the query (thanks to @tombom):
