I improved my previous implementation of TextField validation, this time making a true Custom Control with real-time validation using binding. It is usable with FXML without the need of more Java code.

There is still, however, a trivial point about the "invalid" graphical effect. As you can see here:

I tried with the setStyle but using -fx-font-weight: inherit; breaks the code (don't why since it should be its default value). Injecting a StyleClass doesn't work since I can't revert it when invalid is false.

Any clue? It is of course possible to detach the inner listener and attach another outside with other effects (f.i. showing a green tick sign instead of altering the TextField effect).

You can always revert a style by removing it from the list of style classes i.e.

node.getStyleClass().remove("my-style");

I'm now using it but it seems rather slow... furthermore it does not apply pseudo-state :invalid. Shouldn't it read invalid variable value and apply pseudostate? –  matticala Nov 16 '12 at 13:42
    
I have used the add/remove style technique and didn't find it slow, you may need to measure if this part of code is really the problem. You need to implement a Skin to have a state other than those supplied. I guessed so. In fact I'm now watching the JavaOne 2011 tutorial about creating custom controls (parleys.com/#st=5&id=2789&sl=35) to implement a proper redistributable control. I'll take a look at that github too, thanks a lot! –  matticala Nov 16 '12 at 14:22
