I have a server-client basis going on here but it seems that when the server and client handshake I can get the server to send a message back to the client.

This is the server side

It's not entirely clear from your question what the problem is. Is the server not receiving the datagram from client or are you unable to send a response to it? –  EdC Nov 17 '12 at 5:56

You realise you are converting a String to a byte array to a DatagramPacket to yet another byte array to yet another DatagramPacket? And that you are sending to your own InetAddress? Not the peer's? –  EJP Nov 17 '12 at 6:41

Have a look at the consequences of calling sendPacket(easyPacket(...)...) for a start: then have a look at where you're getting the target address of the sent datagram from. But why you need someone else to explain your own code to you is a mystery. –  EJP Nov 17 '12 at 7:15
