I have following query, which I want to optimize.

What can I do in order to improve performance of the query?

I tried to add indices, but this made things worse (the query runs faster without indices).

Try something like this:

I changed 3 inner table scans to 1 scan using some CASE statements and replaced left joins with simple joins (no difference because of WHERE clause). It should speed up the whole query.

You may need to correct some spelling mistakes before it runs correctly, I haven't tested it.

Thanks. Currently that query takes 3.5 seconds on a database with 103000 records in the person table. Are there any other easy performance improvement options? –  Dmitri Pisarenko Nov 19 '12 at 19:27

@DmitriPisarenko Try to add index for fertility_cond_prob_number_of_children.number_of_children . Otherwise I dont see any easy ways to improve performance. –  Igor Romanchenko Nov 22 '12 at 21:39
