I have four 1.5TB drives raid 5'd with mdadm. According to mdadm, this raid group has a size of 4.5TB (makes sense as the cost of RAID 5 is ~1 disk's worth of space). On top of this mdraid, I have a lvm group. LVM reports (via pvdisplay) that only 3000GB (or 2.73 TiB) is available for the volume. What is going on here?

Was the md device grown (made larger) at some point after the PV had been created? Or possibly created on e.g. 1TB drives that were then upgraded one-by-one to 1.5TB drives? You should be able to pvresize /dev/md2 to fix it... –  twalberg Nov 19 '12 at 15:38

I take it back, turns out that pvresize was needed. I have no idea why the installer didn't use the maximum space, but pvresize got me the space back and I could then extend my volume. Twalberg, if you post your comment as an answer, I'll mark it as such. –  Calcipher Nov 19 '12 at 19:54

Not sure why the original PV was created with only part of the capacity of the underlying /dev/md2 device, but this should resize the PV to use the full capacity:

pvresize /dev/md2

You could also use that to only partially extend the PV, or even to shrink it, I think, provided you make sure that the portion you're removing is not currently allocated to any LVs. The manual page for pvresize should have more information on the options you may need for each scenario.
