I am unable to write a simple file to the iCloud container from my app on one device and then successfully read that same file the first time my app runs on a second device.

I started this test scenario with an empty Ubiquity Container on a pair of freshly reset devices. Below is a test case code and console logging that demonstrates the problem I'm having. All of the code below gets run on a background thread.

I install and run the test case on the first device. The code looks for a certain file in the ubiquity container and creates it when it can't find it. Obviously, this is expected the first time it runs on the first device. I was hoping (and expecting) that when the app is freshly installed and runs on a second device, it would be able to find and read the contents of the file created on the first device. It seems that a freshly installed app on a reset device is NEVER able to find and read the existing file and always thinks it needs to create a new one, which unfortunately ends up replacing the file in the ubiquity container if it is already present.

However, after the first attempt (on the second device) fails to find and read the file, if I delete the app, re-install and then re-run it on the same device, it does find the file and is able to read its current contents. It seems like the first run of the app causes the file to be loaded into the ubiquity cache, but not in a state that it can be found by the app. The second run of the app seems to find the file in the cache.

I know you are supposed to start the download of a file on a iOS device, but on the first time for a device, it reports "file not found". Is there something else that needs to be done here? Or does this seem like a new or known bug?

The following code is used to determine the presence of the token file in the ubiquity container and to make sure it can be read.

For this test, the App is stopped after trying to read and not allowed to try to write or replace the token file. The App is then it is killed, deleted and re-installed and run again on Blue iPod touch.

I am observing almost exactly the same behaviour too. Except I am seeing a (null) response in the value field (your isDownloaded) on the first ever query. Creating a new file and moving it to ubiquity container fails with a 512, but on a subsequent run it appears it actually succeeded and overwrote the real (from the iCloud server) data. –  theLastNightTrain Nov 26 '12 at 22:33
    
I think we are actually seeing the same thing. I'm getting the same (null) response on the first query on the first device and the first query on a second device. It's not until the subsequent on the second device that I see a value for isDownloaded. –  Chuck H Nov 27 '12 at 4:54
    
This is a nightmare problem because the Blue device when first run has to trust that there isn't any data, and create some initial data. This will then be treated as the "latest valid" by iCloud and will overwrite the valid data, ruining the user experience. –  theLastNightTrain Nov 29 '12 at 20:51
    
Yes, that is the issue. The main problem for me and my app is that my data model is such that my seeding and de-duping strategy requires knowing whether OR NOT the device is the first device to sync with iCloud. Some apps may not really care, but mine does. I'm still trying to create a reliable work around, but so far, no luck. I am getting close to running out of options and deferring my quest to add iCloud support to my existing app until these issues are fixed. I have asked these same questions on the Apple iOS Developers site, with absolutely no response or interest. –  Chuck H Nov 30 '12 at 1:02

Well, I didn't give up and I now think I have an acceptable work around for this problem. The key to the solution is for the second device to be able to successfully detect the token file that was written to the ubiquity container by the first device, and not try to write the file itself.

Here are the steps that work for me:

  • Immediately try to read the token file from the container.
  • If successful, use the file and ignore the rest of the steps.
  • Otherwise, start a meta data query whose predicate will trigger on two specific file names (the token file you are trying to read and a "dummy" file).
  • Now write a file to the ubiquity container with the dummy file name.
  • As the results for the meta data query arrive, check the upload/download status for the files that it reports.
  • If the query ever reports seeing the token file, then this is NOT the first device and it should continue to try to read the file until successful. It may take a while, but it will eventually read it.
  • If the meta data query reports the dummy file as being completely uploaded and there is still no sign of the token file, then it's safe to assume this is the first device and it's now OK to write the token file.
  • I find it useful to wait until the status of the token file is completely uploaded before trying to use the token. Otherwise, if there are network issues, another device also starting this process may do the same thing and also think it's the first device.

It seems that the writing of the dummy file to the ubiquity container "kick starts" the meta data query enough to get it to report the existence of the token file on a second device. Without it, the meta data query never reports the existence of the token file on anything other than the first device.
