I need to implement a multi- if...else if...else statement in a jQuery plugin for a responsive parallax background image and its position.

The code I have so far is:

However, that isn't exactly what I want. This code defines if a width is less than a certain size. I would like it to say something like

if (current_width > 320 and < 480) {
  bg3.css({'backgroundPosition': newPos(50, windowHeight, pos, 6350, 0.2)});
}

What I want is basically:

Display bg3 at position X for the following size ranges:

Greater than 320 but less than or equal to 480 Greater than 480 but less than or equal to 768 Greater than 768 but less than or equal to 960 Greater than 960

Not sure of what the syntax would need to be.

And is there a more efficient way of writing that code than the multiple if...else if...else statements I have?

Finally, I was wondering how I can echo back the current vertical scroll position on screen so I can get an idea of where to position the images without having to save and reload the page 1000 times.

The first thing about the if statement: you can write:

if( width < someval ){
    .
    .
} else if( width > someotherval && width < sometotalotherval ){

} else {

}

so using the && or || operators.

I do not know what you mean with »echo back and save 100o times«.

Have a look at the:

<element>.getBoundingClientRect()

method. It returns four values: top, left, right and bottom of arbitrary html elements and their origin is the top left corner of the screen. So if an element is not visible because it is at the top and document is scrolled down, than the top value is negative and if the bottom value is negative too, you know that the element is completely invisible. With this method you can easily get the start and end of a div.

Hi Philipp. What I mean by echo back and save and reload 1000 times is, in order for me to determine the exact vertical position in pixels, I need to edit the position in the jQuery file, save it, reload the web page, see if the scrolling works properly, or if there is an overlap or some other offset I need to fix, change the position in the jQuery, save it again, reload again, etc. What I want is to add a variable that will echo back to me (when I reload the web page) the starting and ending vertical position of the div. That way, I can get a better idea of the offset I need. Make sense? –  Ali Samii Nov 22 '12 at 7:21
    
@alisamii why are you trying to create hardcoded variables like this? You can have console.log's all the time on client side, so you can control the overlap without reloading. If you plan to code a plugin why don't you make it configurable without these hardecoded values, so that the user can set it up as he needs? –  philipp Nov 22 '12 at 7:42
    
I am working with a plugin that I didn't write called nbm-parallax.js and these values are hardcoded in. I'm not that proficient in jQuery (quite a spring chicken in fact) and so just trying to work with what I have. If there's a better way to do it, I'm all ears (or eyes) –  Ali Samii Nov 22 '12 at 7:52

@alisamii well ok, would lead to far if I would reveal all approaches possible to obtain values for your parallax configuration. I made good experiences with trying to hand over as much values as possible to the css and retrieve the relevant values with a getter all the time. So if you modify the css, at runtime in the debug console, the value the getter returns is different, what will lead to a different effect. All you have to do than is to update the css file. If this leads to performance leaks, you can hardcode the values later when you are finished. –  philipp Nov 22 '12 at 8:12

If you reverse the order of your statements using lowest value first you won't have the same overlap problem. Only one of the conditions will be true

if( current_width < 320 ){

}else if( current_width < 480){
  /* true when greater or equal to 320 and less than 480 */
}

/* etc*/
