I need to implement a method like this:

public IList<T> Sort(IList<T> unsortedList, string[] fieldList, string[] direction)
{
   /// ....
}

This method is to sort a collection by a given list of fieldList by user and for each field we have appropriate direction I search for the algorithm but no thing help me now

Oh, I use C#, the situation is that I want my user choose some properties to display, and also allow user sort by some properties. The problem is that I cannot determine which property my user like to sort by, and how to do if they like to sort by 2 properties, one DESC and one ASC. –  user1162069 Nov 22 '12 at 14:46

Yes, you can do this, for example using Reflection to get the property values.

This blog post describes one way to do it.

You would create a GenericComparer for each property, then implement a Comparer that aggregates them. The aggregate comparer would look something like (with error checking omitted for brevity):

public class MultiplePropertyComparer<T> : IComparer<T>
{
    IComparer<T>[] comparers;
    public MultiplePropertyComparer(string[] propertyNames, string[] direction)
    {
        comparers = new IComparer<T>[propertyNames.Length];
        for (int i = 0; i < propertyNames.Length; i++)
        {
            // Assumes propertyNames and direction arrays are non-null and the same length
            comparers[i] = new GenericComparer<T>(propertyNames[i], direction[i] == "DESC");
        }
    }
    public int Compare(T x, T y)
    {
        for (int i = 0; i < comparers.Length; i++)
        {
            int result = comparers[i].Compare(x, y);
            if (result != 0) return result;
        }
        return 0;
    }
}

You could also look at the WPF ListCollectionView class, which can do the sorting for you.

You have to sort by the first criteria, then for each subset of items being equals regarding to the first criteria, sort regarding the second criteria. Try to code something, if it does not work, post the code and ask for help. Please don't ask us to do your job/homework.

because I can not determine which field user choose, it is dynamic, so that I cannot use Linq OrderBy (o=>0.[what is going here]).ThanBy(o=>o.[what's here]). For example, we have object Employee and my user choose Name Decending, DOB Ascending. And they also choose WorkingDuration Descending, Salary - Accending, etc... After searching and asking some friend, I found it is very easy way to do, even it does not cover all I need for generic objects, only apply for seperate type of object
1. I already known the list of column names, the only things left is which columns is chosen by user, so that I can user switch case to check weather a column is chosen
2. Use Linq and Lamda Expression, it will auto join together and arrange by order
3. The code sample like this:

public IEnumerable<Employee> Sort(IEnumerable<Employee> unsortedList, string[] fieldList, bool[] direction)
{

// I check the the fieldList & direction have the same size in another place
for(int i=0; i< fieldList.Count; i++)
 {
     switch 
     case "Name":
       unsortList = directions[i]? unsortedList.Orderby(e=>e.Name):unsortedList.OrderByDescending(e=>e.Name);
       break;
     case "Salary":
     // The same as Name
    ......
  }
return unsortedList;    

}

After finnish the For Loop, the result is the same as unsortList.OtherBy(e=>e.Name).OrderBy(e=>e.Salary)....

Hope this help for someone in some case...
