I want to create an unique ID in R based on two columns of latitude and longitude so that duplicated locations have the same cluster ID.

For example:

LAT        LONG    Cluster_ID
13.5330 -15.4180   1
13.5330 -15.4180   1
13.5330 -15.4180   1
13.5330 -15.4180   1
13.5330 -15.4170   2
13.5330 -15.4170   2
13.5330 -15.4170   2
13.5340 -14.9350   3

EDIT: Incorporated @Spacedman's suggestion to supply drop=TRUE to interaction.

Adding drop=TRUE to your interaction call will give you numbers from 1 to 5 rather than the random looking codes you have here. –  Spacedman Nov 26 '12 at 16:28

ok, i have a further question by the way. my data should have years for 1990:2010 but for most of the clusters, some years are missing. i want R to search which are missing then fill them in. further, i also want to create NAs for the response variable and duplicate the other variables in the new cases that have been created. help please if u can. thanks, Jones –  jonestats Nov 27 '12 at 13:47

These commands create an id variable starting with 1:

comb <- with(dat, paste(LAT, LONG))
within(dat, Cluster_ID <- match(comb, unique(comb)))

.GRP was added to data.table 1.8.3, allowing you to do the following:

Thank u all for the responses. they are working perfectly and it has saved me a lot of time. after creating a unique id, the next thing i would like to do is duplicate some fields and create NAs for others. my data is in years and not all clusters have data for all the years, so first i want to fill up the missing years (1990:2010) for all the ids. then fill the rest of the fields where i have added the years and create NAs for others where i want to predict. –  jonestats Nov 27 '12 at 13:16
