I have the following dataset in a file called test.csv:

I can use the following code to get the list of people who have visited a complex:

import numpy as np
a = np.recfromcsv('test.csv')
print a[a['first_visit_date'] != '']

Here is the issue that I am having. I cannot seem to find a way to print a conditional column called trainer. I want to figure out how to output 'trainer_operator' if it is not empty, otherwise I would like to output 'trainer_managing'. I think I need to use numpy.lib.recfunctions.rec_append_fields to create the column. I am just not sure how to populate it.

I should also say that I have just started to discover the power of numpy, so I am trying to use it for a lot of things. This may not be the correct situation in which to use it. If there is a better way to manipulate the data, please let me know that as well.

One straightforward approach would be to use numpy.where:

>>> fvd_exists = a['first_visit_date'] != ''
>>> np.where(fvd_exists, a['trainer_managing'], a['trainer_operator'])
array(['"06DA1B3-Lebanon NH"', '"06405B2-Lebanon NH"',
       '"0643D38-Hanover NH"', '"06CB8CF-Hanover NH"',
       '"06D26AD-Hanover NH"', '"06388B2-Lebanon NH"',
       ...

If you have a more complex set of requirements, simply express them using boolean operations on a, and pass the result in place of fvd_exists.

You can then create a new record array using fromarrays. Here's a full exmaple:

>>> a = np.recfromcsv('test.csv')
>>> b = a[a['first_visit_date'] != '']
>>> has_op = b['trainer_operator'] != ''
>>> trainer_col = np.where(name, b.trainer_operator, b.trainer_managing)
>>> np.rec.fromarrays([b.id, b.enrollment_date, trainer_col],
...                   names=['id', 'enrollment_date', 'trainer'])

I feel like this is the right track. Here is where I am hung up. I think this is the right track. Thank you so much for the help. If I reduce my set by doing something like b = a[a['first_visit_date'] != ''] and name = b['trainer_operator'] != '', how do I do something like this np.where(name, b['id', 'enrollment_date', 'trainer_managing'], b['id', 'enrollment_date', 'trainer_operator'])? –  BigHandsome Nov 27 '12 at 0:26
    
I ended up switching to pandas. I can use a statement like a['TRAINER'] = np.where(name, a['TRAINER_OPERATOR'], a['TRAINER_MANAGING']) to create and populate the new field. Then I used a[pandas.isnull(a['FIRST_VISIT_DATE']) to get the result set I needed. Thank you for your help! –  BigHandsome Nov 27 '12 at 3:58
    
@BigHandsome, sorry for the delayed response -- I didn't have my laptop in front of me for testing, and I didn't want to suggest something that doesn't work. I've posted a pure numpy solution, but it sounds like pandas provides a better solution for your particular needs. –  senderle Nov 27 '12 at 14:01
