Say I have this piece of functionality which used to be repeated alot. It was then factored out into a static class, which now gets called alot from different places. Now I would like to unit test the different places this piece of gets called from.

Assuming that the factored piece is functionally sound (as proven by its specific unit tests), how do I make sure the calling code is tested properly c.q. the factored piece is actually called.

I'm looking for best practices regarding this issue as it seems to occur a lot.

N.b. the code is by no means set in stone; it doesn't have to be static.

If you want to verify that helper methods are called properly, then I'd make this helper class non-static and implementing some interface IFooService. Then inject this interface to helper class consumers. Interface can be easily mocked and expectations on interface members calls can be easily verified. Also consider to use single instance of helper class (this is easily achieved by dependency injection frameworks).

If your helper class has very simple methods (like mapping entities to dto objects, creating string representation of money value, etc) then I'd skipped helper methods calls verification - you will see if something wrong by exercising SUT. Do you verify calls to something like String.IsNullOrEmpty, or Int32.Parse?
