Well after getting my python script done with the help of all of you i would like to know if its possible to create a file instead of breaking the main 20mb in parts of 860 bytes each is it possible to break looking for the prefix // i mean each record in binary file that i take as a main source starts with // i want a file for each record with the content of every bit from the first // to the next and do that for all // until the end of the Binary file.

example of the file :

//ST    1023700000-Vcn´¨ ¾[Çz±//ST       1023700001 ...  

in resume 1 file for with all the content from // to the next // from the start of the main file to end its about 20.000 files in the end(more or less) :D

You have to be careful - it's always possible for binary numbers to match the characters // that you're searching for. In fact there's a 1/65536 chance of it. –  Mark Ransom Nov 30 '12 at 17:49
    
in my file i looked and there is only // in the prefix of each record that makes my life a bit easyer i was using a hex editor to search for this pattern and every buffer from // to another // have between 820 and 819 bytes :D –  PythonNewbie Nov 30 '12 at 17:59
    
Just because the pattern isn't in the file this time doesn't mean it won't be in the next file. If it's a binary file why does the record length change? –  Mark Ransom Nov 30 '12 at 18:03
    
that was a mistake from the people who created the file that was detected with my script, my script breaks the binary every 820 bytes and use the 16:32 buffer for a filename that is the unique id of each record... but as we noticed from the record 32 until the end of the file there is some files that had the wrong name and why is that ?? simply because they had 819 bytes instead of the correct 820 ... :) –  PythonNewbie Nov 30 '12 at 18:08
    
If you didn't open the file in binary 'b' mode (on Windows), you will find that '\r' bytes get stripped as you read the file. The file was probably written correctly. –  Mark Ransom Nov 30 '12 at 20:28
