I need to get the top N values in an xml tree, or better said, I need to get the values that are greater or equal to the Nth value, so including the " ex-aequos". The xml I start with is this one

When I use the xslt below, the structure is o.k. but it obviously doesn't return the elements with id 9,14 and 19.

Don't know which path to follow now. The code below doesn't do the trick.

My undestanding of the question: For each province, you sort the municipalities by their @value. Then you take the top three, and if there are others that have the same @value as the third, you include that one, too. Is that right?

I believe this can only be done with some string trickery (see the comments in the code):

If you want the municipalities to be sorted, then of course you have to include another xsl:sort:

      </xsl:apply-templates>

Your understanding of the question is correct. I do like trickery when it works, and yours does. I see some optimizations, for instance that you only need to concat the first 3 values into sortedvalues. –  Ophileon Dec 1 '12 at 23:15
