I'm trying to profile a function. The function is meant to convert a structure to an array. I have two different approaches, using marshaling or BitConverter. Of course the marshaling method makes a single function that can work with nearly all structures given certain conditions. The BitConverter requires a custom function for each structure. My initial thought was that the BitConverter would be faster but my testing results are not consistent.

Here is a cut and paste of the benchmark.

I've tried the below benchmark in a number of different forms. When I do the benchmark for the BitConverter function first it tends to be faster. When I do the benchmark for the Marshaling function first it tends to be faster. What am I missing?

Your code is too long for me to read. But It can be a JIT issue. I would run each method once before starting to measure the duration. – L.B Dec 1 '12 at 20:46

On my really slow Pentium B950 the benchmarks complete in almost no time? Longest run (100k iterations) was 0.16 seconds. You should not run a fixed numvber of iterations, but instead run for a fixed TIME and COUNT the iterations, to get "good" results. EDIT running 10.000.000 iterations lets the marshal version win with 10%+ even though the BitConverter version runs first. – igrimpe Dec 1 '12 at 21:33
I agree, I generally run the benchmark with 1000000+ iterations. Although I have yet to have marshaling win unless it is executed first. I do like the idea of processing for a specified amount of time however. That is a good idea. – galford13x Dec 1 '12 at 23:33

Any of the cases below 100000 is too small to get consistent results.

The results are very inconsistent even between runs of the same code (> 2x timing differences). It makes me think there is a significant amount of garbage being generated and the outcome is dominated by when garbage collection kicks in and the performance of the garbage collector.

I added some GC.Collect calls after stopping the stopwatch and this made the results somewhat more consistent (variation between runs was +/- 10%). Marshaling was faster for 100000 and 1000000 iterations typically by 1.5 - 2 times. This was on Mono compiled for Release|x86, so your mileage may vary.

Thanks a bunch for the analysis. The GC actually makes a little sense. I'll try running the benchmarks separately rather than in the same process. That should give more consistent results I think. Although when I run the benchmark I rarely get results > +-10%. I too get ~ 1.5-2.0 ratio with 1000000 and 10000000 runs, however, the fastest benchmark is the one I run first (which is why I like the GC suggestion). – galford13x Dec 1 '12 at 23:31
Interestingly enough, I ran the benchmarks in different processes, and also executed the benchmark is a separate thread. I get better results with the BitConverter. – galford13x Dec 2 '12 at 0:08
