I'm encountering the following error when transcoding using FFMPEG. From what I've been able to find, I shouldn't have to input anymore parameters or anything. I tried adding the flag "-coder 1", which got me a file, but the video was a solid block of green.

Here's my command:

ffmpeg -i Glueck_Newsreel.avi -vcodec ffv1 -acodec pcm_s16le mp0001.mkv

Thank you for including the console output. The important message is:

[ffv1 @ 0x13c8340] bits_per_raw_sample of more than 8 needs -coder 1 currently

Meaning you have to add -coder 1 as an output option. However, there has been a good amount of work and updates to ffv1 recently, so you may want to use a newer ffmpeg.

I did try adding the -coder 1 flag, but the resulting file was unusable. The video was just a block of green. Does it need to be in a specific part of the command? I think I ran ffmpeg -i Glueck_Newsreel.avi -vcodec ffv1 -acodec pcm_s16le -coder 1 mp0001.mkv. I'll update ffmpeg though and try again. Thanks! – Nathan Dec 4 '12 at 20:37
@Nathan It's green because your player can't properly decode YUV 4:2:2 colorspace. See this answer for a similar issue. Output option placement usually does not matter. – LordNeckbeard Dec 4 '12 at 21:16
Thanks, again! I was using FFV1 because of it's lossless video compression and I was told that it would play fine in most media players, including VLC. I guess this isn't the case. Will adding pix_fmt yuv420p to my command defeat my purpose of lossless compression or otherwise sacrifice quality? Sorry, I don't know much about colorspaces. – Nathan Dec 4 '12 at 21:22
@Nathan You're probably using an old VLC. I imagine a recent version will play it fine and will probably convert to yuv420p upon playback. – LordNeckbeard Dec 4 '12 at 22:42
