Can someone help me to improve this code and give me some hints. I was trying to create an OpenMP version of Mandelbrot set on my own. I'm OpenMP beginner and here I'm not getting some speed up, it is probably because of #pragma omp critical but I cannot think of a better idea right now.

Did it ever occur to you that you could first compute an array with colour data (each point is computed independently) and then write the image data to the file? What kind of speed-up do you expect when you are computing line pixel after pixel in order to write them sequentially to the file? –  Hristo Iliev Dec 5 '12 at 9:44

Fixing the approach as per the comment results in these timings1:

Without openMP:

And with openMP enabled:

Mandelbrot works best with both loops collapsed and schedule(dynamic). +1 for the ASCII impression :) –  Hristo Iliev Dec 5 '12 at 12:35
    
@HristoIliev Thanks. The ASCII thing was born out of frustration: I'm limited to a windows box these days and it appears to be wholly incapable of viewing PPM... So I used aview from Cygwin as a crutch :) –  sehe Dec 5 '12 at 13:44
