I am fairly new to iOS programming and have run into a problem I haven't been able to solve on my own.

My app's main part is a list of animals (AnimalTableViewController) which is searchable (this function works). After clicking on a certain cell, you should be able to view an image of an animal. All the animal images are compiled in the PagerViewController (CustomPagerViewController).

What I need to do is to connect a dynamic table cell to a particular view/storyboard. I have been able to connect a cell to an image before - the array of images was showing in a single view controller. I chose to do it via PagerViewController this time because I needed the swipe function (methods related to swipe are to be found in the PagerViewController.m and they all work as expected).

Please can you help me with this, I haven't found any tutorial or advice on how to pass data between UITableView and PagerViewController.

Create a identifier for a segue (the line between 2 views in Interface Builder)

Then add the following code to AnimalTableViewController

- (void)prepareForSegue:(UIStoryboardSegue *)segue sender:(id)sender
{
    if ([[segue identifier] isEqualToString:@"DetailSegue"]) {

        PagerViewController *detailVC = [segue destinationViewController];
        detailVC.currentAnimal = sender;
    }
}

Then in your PagerViewController.h create

@property (strong, nonatomic) Animal *currentAnimal;

Now you can access the animal in PagerViewController by self.currentAnimal

Thank you, Roland! You are a star! However, when I click on any cell, it makes me go to the first animal only; any ideas how to jump to a specific animal? The cell labels are the same names as the storyboards, I was thinking of doing this through 'if conditional statement' or 'switch', but that might end up quite lengthy... What do you suggest would be the best solution? –  iOSnewbie Dec 5 '12 at 15:09
    
Do you need a new Viewcontroller for each animal? Maybe you should make 1 viewController and add all the logic there. You could just use the name of the animal if the Segue identifiers are the same. Like: [self addChildViewController:[self.storyboard instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:self.animal.name]]; –  Roland Keesom Dec 5 '12 at 15:22

You need to setup a segue from your clicked UITableViewCell to the new viewController. Use the prepareForSegue method and pass the UIImage (or array of images) to the new viewController. Once the array is part of the new viewController you can manipulate the array however you like.

  1. Setup a new segue from the UITableViewCell to the viewController.
  2. Set the segue identifier.
  3. Send the viewController the image (or array of images in your case) based on the selected UITableViewCell's indexPath.
