I have a csv file with population records for 50 states, four regions (Northeast, West, etc.), and Puerto Rico, so there are more than 50 rows of data. I need to find the number of states with a population increase, so I don't want to check all of the rows, just 50 of them for the 50 states, the 6th element through the 56th element. I believe a sublist of the ArrayList is the way to go, but how would I code it? This is the portion of my code I'm working on:

As awolfe91 mentioned, simply

    if(i == 56) break;

    if (pr1.getPopch2011() > 0) {

OR slice the array list as you require. You can write a utility like

public static <T> List<T> slice(List<T> list, int index, int count) {
    List<T> result = new ArrayList<T>();
    if (index >= 0 && index < list.size()) {
    int end = index + count < list.size() ? index + count : list.size();
        for (int i = index; i < end; i++) {
                result.add(list.get(i));
         }
    }
    return result;
}

Thank you. I noticed that my data file lists District of Columbia within the 7th through 57th elements, which is not a state. How do I not count it? –  Grafica Dec 5 '12 at 22:10
    
Just change the range as required. Just do a -1 into the index as the indexes in the array start with 0 and the rows in csv you are counting would be starting from 1. –  mtk Dec 5 '12 at 22:14

The NAME column of the data file starts like this: United States Northeast Region Midwest Region South Region West Region Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware District of Columbia Florida etc. –  Grafica Dec 5 '12 at 22:19

You can simply initialize i to 5, and cease when i==56.

Yep! But since ArrayLists are also 0-indexed, the sixth element will actually be list.get(5), so you should have for(int i=5; i<57; i++). Hope that helps! –  awolfe91 Dec 5 '12 at 21:08

You can also try:

for(PopulationRecord pr1 : popList.subList(5, 56)) {
    if (pr1.getPopch2011() > 0) {
        x++;
    }
}
