I would very much like to recreate this graph using a pure ggplot2 approach since I would like to solve all my plotting using that package.

I have created a small dataset to play around with. The following code defines a data.frame and melts it into a format that ggplot usually likes.

Now I know that this moltdf can be passed to ggplot but I have no idea how to generate the different segments in the rather informationdense plot above.

I have tried this approach (theatavism.blogspot.dk/2009/05/…), but it's not what I want. I want exactly the plot in the attached image. I have no idea how to create that in ggplot2. Hence, my question. –  Dr. Mike Dec 10 '12 at 10:39

If you want exactly this plot, I don't really understand why you want to use ggplot2. Just for the sake of using ggplot2? –  Roland Dec 10 '12 at 10:54
    
I am very tempted to post a solution, and may actually bite if you do the basic work of getting the data into a data frame, ready to process and pass to ggplot. –  Andrie Dec 10 '12 at 11:00

If you don't want to load PerformanceAnalytics, why not just use base graphics? The chart.Correlation function is just a slightly embellished version of the code from example(pairs) which is also available here –  GSee Dec 10 '12 at 14:52

I think you need ggpairs here - possibly with some further tweaks. Example:

> library(GGally)
> ggpairs(mtcars)

simple ggpairs demo


Update: based on updated question with added data:

> ggpairs(mydf[, 2:5])

ggpairs on mydf

Interesting package indeed and goes a long way to present almost the same information. But I have to admit I like the presentation better as generated by the chart.Correlation function. –  Dr. Mike Dec 10 '12 at 14:38
