Hello all and thank you for your time.

I am running SQL 2008, I have been tasked to create a report that groups 'vendor name' and certain information together, furthermore group it by fiscal year and their quarters.

It went well up the the grouping by year, except that our fiscal start isnt on january but instead November. I have a date field called 'Expected Arrival Date' that is formatted as 'yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm;ss.mmm' I am not sure how i can group it to associate:

A. the fiscal year starting with November year before to the rest of the fiscal year ending at october (example fiscal year 2012 = beginning November 2011 - End October 2012

B. The fiscal quarter Nov1- Jan31 , Feb1 - Apr30, May1-July31, Aug1-Oct31

Here is the code I already have

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you have any helpful pointers to create a nice query it would also be appreciated .

Hi Hamlet thank you for your time, the data_view is a view that was created a long time ago by someone else and pulls data from multiple tables through two database servers. Currently they use excel to access the view and it sends multiple thousand entries. This new view is meant to group as much information as possible (roughly down to only 600 entries) I also put the view in the edit, I would prefer not changing that view since other people still use it. –  jnoel10 Dec 13 '12 at 16:14

Something like this should work:

Richard Deeming's SQL works perfectly in MySQL, but I wasn't happy with the size of the query, so I used the basic concept to create a much smaller query using the built-in MySQL IF() function:

SELECT
    YEAR(date),
    MONTH(date),
    YEAR(date) + IF(MONTH(date)>10, 1, 0) as 'FiscalYear',
    IF(MONTH(date)>10, 1, CEIL((MONTH(date)+2)/3)) as 'FiscalQuarter'
FROM dates
