I have troubles optimizing the following SQL query (using postgresql 9.1) :

If I simply add the output of the regions query everything is as fast as expected.

Calculating the regions query by itself is also very fast.

The time difference between the two different ways gets even bigger if I add more columns to the select from users.

Is there some way to calculate everything in one fast query?

Any help or pointers to solutions are greatly appreciated.

[edit] Adding sample of region table as per requests in the comments The user can select a region (user_region), that may be the country, the province or a city/part of a city. The region query tries to find all region_ids that are in that country, province or city. If the user selects Austria (region_id = 1), than all other region_ids from Austria should be returned. If the user selects "Lower Austria" (region_id = 26), than all regions from the province of lower Austria should be returned (in the sample data 27,28,29,30).

@didierc: After a little bit of trying to optimize and reducing the complex real query to the key problem in order to post it here. I guess you are referring to the regions query. It calculates all subregions of a given region_id, which in the above example is 1. –  Hartwig Dec 14 '12 at 11:08

The problem is the calculation of the regions. Complex join conditions result in nested loops joins, which can slow down queries. What is that subquery trying to do? –  Gordon Linoff Dec 14 '12 at 14:05

A join is usually more efficient than an in clause:

SELECT id FROM users 
  INNER JOIN regions ON user_region = region_id;

Assuming each user matches only one region (which seems true from your query), this will give you equivalent results.

I've edited the original question and added some sample data. The thing that I don't understand is, that two separate queries are fast, but when I put both of them together, it is very slow. –  Hartwig Dec 14 '12 at 14:47

Have you tried to ANALYZE your tables?

From the explain you posted I can see that Postgres expected up to 39 times fewer rows than what was actually returned.

When Postgres' expectation is much different than the actual result set, it can choose a sub-optimal plan, thus yielding an inferior query plan and taking way longer to finish your query.
