I have been struggling to get this code to compile. I am trying to implement a simple Matrix class for use in another calculation.

As of now I am stuck on the following two errors: From the compiler:

g++ -g -Wall -c main.cpp
In file included from main.cpp:19:0:
    Matrix.hh:2:7: error: redefinition of ‘class Matrix’
    Matrix.hh:2:14: error: previous definition of ‘class Matrix’

I don't see any obvious redefinitions. Please help

The code you have shown, doesn't have this compile error. Most likely, Matrix.hh is included twice, either directly or indirectly in main.cpp. Show main.cpp as well. –  Olaf Dietsche Dec 17 '12 at 8:41

It is common practice to use "#include guards" in C and C++ header files to prevent redefinition.

For example, in your case:

#ifndef MATRIX_H
#define MATRIX_H

class Matrix {
   // [...]
};

#endif

This construct means that if #include "Matrix.hh" appears more than once in a source file (and its included files), then class Matrix is only ever defined once.

Some C and C++ implementations provide the non-standard directive #pragma once (as suggested in the comments). This directive, inserted at the top of a header file, will ensure that the file is only included once. I prefer the construct I demonstrated above for portability reasons.
