I am querying a postgres db utilizing the jdbc driver and this is a going to be a fairly basic standalone java app querying a local installation/hosted server.

I wanted to log the sql that I pass with format strings to check whether I am simply passing question marks or actual column names, but turns out jdbc doesn't support that kind of logging for thread safety. I constructed my prepared statement to be different on different conditions.

So I am using a statement to select everything I need and then retrieving using a resultset and meanwhile creating a prepared object depending on those resultsets. My prepared statement can vary between two sql updates when before I used two different prepared statements and I received a deadlock. Therefore do I need connection pooling? I would rather not as this standalone app shouldn't take up too much more time as I've already invested too much time trying to debug and troubleshoot server issues. My code is below:

The errors/SQL returned from printing was long with the first couple print statements indicating the # of allowable rows so I shortened it:

Using a connection pool won't fix bugs you have in your code. It seems you're using the same connection to do everything anyway. But it's hard to tell, since you don't provide any code, and only vague descriptions of the errors you get. –  JB Nizet Dec 17 '12 at 20:19
    
This was an internal project, but I'll change some of my name assignments and I've been debugging for a while so I might as well just post it. In any case, I'm populating a column based on a LEVEL_DEPT column's value as a reference to another column NAME_#'s value. Then I'm taking care of duplicate wiki_url entries. –  J10598 Dec 17 '12 at 20:34
    
Yeah, you really need to show the actual SQL that gets run, and the exact text of any error messages, as well as your PostgreSQL version. I cannot see how a connection pool has anything to do with what you're showing in your code, but I also cannot imagine how you're managing to get a deadlock while using only a single connection. The code looks over-complex and I suspect it can all be accomplished with a couple of smarter UPDATE statements or a CTE, but it's hard to say without seeing the final SQL you run. –  Craig Ringer Dec 18 '12 at 0:06
    
Well the actual SQL that gets run is exactly what I put within the code. It is how I set up my preparedstatements. My PostgreSQL version is 9.2 and this it cannot be resolved by simple update statements because you cannot perform dynamic comparisons with table column names. So no, it cannot be accomplished with a "couple of smarter UPDATE statements," and I have a large dataset so I need to use prepared statements and batch updates. –  J10598 Dec 18 '12 at 20:35

The exception cleary says wiki_url does not exist in table adminboundaries.

org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: ERROR: column "wiki_url" of relation "adminboundaries" does not exist

I think it comes from the update query are executing

conn.prepareStatement("UPDATE adminboundaries SET WIKI_URL = ?");

Since postgresql is case sensitive Change your query to

conn.prepareStatement("UPDATE AdminBoundaries SET WIKI_URL = ?"); assuming your table name is AdminBoundaries.

I forgot to say that I've actually tried that and I've tried changing the case. I've updated my code accordingly. The error is actually related to a the first loop in comparing long values from a column, but I am unsure how to fix that. –  J10598 Dec 19 '12 at 14:30
