When using this at the command line I get very bad images with only grey or stripes in them. It seems "the frame rate differs from container frame rate: 59.94 (60000/1001) -> 29.97 (30000/1001)".

Is there any way I can fix this in the ffmpeg statement?

ffmpeg -ss 00:00:10 -i FILENAME.mp4 -vframes 1 FILENAME.jpg

try this - seems like cropping is might be set wrong here. (height is not multiple of 16 thought that is invalid according to standard)

./ffmpeg -i ~/Sites/f3_voyage.mov -ss 00:00:10 -f image2 -vframes 1 -s 640x432 FILENAME.jpg

It seems like at 10 seconds you do not have a reference frame, Try this: ffmpeg -i FILENAME.mp4 -ss 00:00:10 -vframes 1 FILENAME.jpg. This will apply the -ss option on the output,ffpeg would have already decoded your file and hence this should work.
