I'm trying to asynchronously load images in my Cocos2D Android game, but after I load and unload some images, I get an OutOfMemoryError. I only get this error on the Samsung Galaxy S3, but not on my Galaxy Nexus, so I'm having a very hard time finding where the problem is.

I've made sure that I'm free the memory from all of the Bitmaps and CCTexture2D's correctly, but when I load in my level, load some textures for an animation, free the memory of those textures, and then load in the textures for a new animation, I get this error on the GS3. As I said, the Galaxy Nexus I'm testing on works fine, and I've even checked that it also throws an OutOfMemoryError when both sets of assets are loaded. My guess is that, somehow, the GS3 is not freeing up the GL memory correctly, or that I'm not doing something that the GS3 wants me to do, but I can't figure out where I am going wrong.

This is how I load in the assets from an AsyncTask:

And here is what I am doing to the assets when i clean them up:


This is pretty much using standard Cocos2D for Android. If any of you have come across a similar error, or may know what is different with the GS3 than the Galaxy Nexus that could be causing this problem, please let me know. I've also tried adding this line to removeTexture():


but it is making things even worse on the GS3 and having no real effect on the Galaxy Nexus... I've tried setting the android:largeHeap="true", but that only showed me that the Galaxy Nexus is doing things perfectly fine with releasing the textures from these calls while the GS3 is not freeing the memory and holds it until crashing...

You can try to explicitly call System.gc() for faster garbage collection. AFAIK OpenGL memory is allocated outside Java heap so it shouldn't consume application's memory. What are heap sizes of both devices? Have you tried to test it on emulators with different heap sizes? –  keaukraine Dec 19 '12 at 9:23
I havent tried it on an emulator, but I have tried tracking it with the Eclipse DDMS view and have forced a GC from that tool, but even then it didnt help. When I run the app, both devices show roughly 45-60MB heap sizes with about 9MB free, even when the S3 crashes it is telling me that it has several MB free. I'm no longer thinking it is a Heap memory issue, but it is definitely some sort of memory issue. –  Intrivix Dec 19 '12 at 17:10
