I have custom mapView (I named it JMMapView, which is inherited from UIView) where I created UIImageView in UIScrollView. It does basic stuff as zooming, scrolling, adding pinpoints and so on. But the main problem is that it loads one Image stored in Documents folder (images are downloaded at runtime and stored permanent in documents folder) and takes lots of memory. For example, all images are from 100kb to 800kb, but loading only one image memory is taken from 20mb to 40mb. What I am doing wrong? Why it takes so much memory? I use ARC and images are all PNG with size like 2000x2000.

I'll be glad to see a good answer to that question. Meanwhile will throw some thoughts since I've been in similar situation. PNG is a compressed (loseless) format. It's normal to expand in memory to uncompressed bitmap. You can try optimizing PNGs but it Apple's optimization is a different kind of beast. You could also try using JPEG and (probably the best option) 8bit PNGs if you could fit in 256 color adaptive palette. –  demosten Dec 19 '12 at 15:43

@demosten It actually doesn't help if not counting that image was shirked from 600kb to 100kb, because there are not much colors, so I did 8bit PNG with 128 colors selective palette in Photoshop. It still counts that it is 2000x2000 dimensions, so it takes that almost 16mb in memory. –  PooLaS Dec 21 '12 at 9:19
    
This means that Apple implementation converts everything into 32bit per pixel internal image. This is the best way if you are looking for speed but is not memory efficient. Tiling is a good option. Probably you could also search for some GPU based solution to load it as a texture and display it. GPU textures should be much more memory efficient. –  demosten Dec 21 '12 at 11:36

The image may be 100-800kb while compressed as a PNG, but it must be fully decompressed in memory.

This means a 2000x2000 image with alpha transparency (RGBA) will be 2000x2000x4 bytes, or roughly 15 megabytes. This is why the images are using up so much memory.

The first thing you should do is make sure the images do not have an alpha channel, and that the view they are displayed in has opaque set to YES to disable any transparency/blending.

You probably should use a tile-based approach as well. Apple has good sample code to demonstrate this with their PhotoScroller sample project.

Images don't need alpha channel. How can I remove them? Also, I tried to change png to jpg, but it still got about 14mb in memory –  PooLaS Dec 19 '12 at 16:03
    
@PooLaS Format doesn't matter. png, jpg, tiff, gif, etc. are all converted to full width x height x 4 in memory. You should look into tiling such a large image. –  rmaddy Dec 19 '12 at 17:47
