I am working on a scheduling application which has following classes:

public class Trip
   //contains 1-4 WorkDays objects
   public List<WorkDays> WorkDays { get; set; }

public class WorkDays
   //contains 1-7 Flight objects
   public List<Flight> Flights { get; set; }

public class Flight
   //properties for departure city, arrival city, and pay.

I have dictionary of trips:

Dictionary<string, Trip> Trips;

To update the pay in the Flights class, I use a simple EF table entity called CityPairs. Each row of this entity has 3 columns (city1, city2, and DistancePay)

In my dictionary object Trips, I want to update the DistancePay of every flight. I am able to brute force succeed in doing so, but it takes a minute to do so.

To update, I use a foreach to loop through Trips, a foreach to loop through WorkDays, and a foreach to loop through Flights. In the last loop I call a method calcDistTfp to update the pay.

Here is my code for my brute force update:

    TtpDataEntities ttp = new TtpDataEntities();
     decimal distTfp = (from tfp in ttp.TtpDatas
                        where (tfp.city1 == myFlight.DepSta && 
                               tfp.city2 == myFlight.ArrSta) ||
                              (tfp.city2 == myFlight.DepSta && 
                               tfp.city1 == myFlight.ArrSta)
                        select tfp.tfp).FirstOrDefault();
     return distTfp;

I know it can be done much more elegantly, but as a beginner in LINQ I am stumped. Tomorrow, I'll play with different joins between the dictionary and the sql table in LINQ.

At any rate, any suggestions are appreciated.

How big are your tables?...If they are big then you should look at the indexing. Are the fields you are filtering on within a defined index? Just asking... I have seen queries run for milisecons but then take five minutes when a where or order by was thrown on that was not in a first or secondary index. –  lrb Dec 24 '12 at 4:06
The table is not particularly big, it contains 1576 rows of data. The dictionary object contains 9000 Trip objects. Each Trip object contains 1-4 WorkDay objects. Each WorkDay object contains 1-7 flights. –  skibikegold Dec 24 '12 at 4:26
