I have a RESTful webApplication(Lets call it WA1) that receives POSTs, Query a DB and responds accordingly.WA1 is light as possible(memory perspective), connections to DB is fast as possible and closes when done fetching.

Now, I need to build a gateway(WA2) that will talk to WA1 from one leg and receive 'commands' from another leg. Both sits on different physical machines.

Both web applications must withstand 500 concurrent connection at any time.

Now, from the performance point of view, I find it hard decide if I should use RMI in my implementation or simply shoot POSTs to WA1 ? Will the data transfer be a bottleneck in a RMI world ? What are the Pros and Cons for such design?

I see no good reason to go with RMI. It locks you into a Java only solution, so non-Java clients will find it harder to talk to the server.

You're already using REST with great success. Simple and open win - go with the HTTP based solution. It'll be far more generic.
