I'm getting locks in Core Data. I really don't understand the reason. Because I'm creating a background MOC when I'm processing in a background thread. Below you can see what a stack trace (I'm pausing the execution of the app) looks like when this happens:

In the EventKitHelperSyncSerialBackgroundQueue I'm doing some Core Data processing in a background queue. Reminders are NSManagedObjects. Sorry for the amount of code but I thought it's better to not leave out any important details.

Not totally sure if this applies to you but I was getting similar errors. I solved them by

  1. Using NSPrivateQueueConcurrencyType not NSConfinementConcurrencyType to take processing off the main thread.

  2. Putting executeFetchRequest inside MOC's performBlockAndWait.

So in CoreDataHelper.m's fetchEntity method you would have something like this:

I was about to add this in an edit before you wrote ;-) After some trial and error on myself I changed to NSPrivateQueueConcurrencyType and now I don't have any issues anymore. Although I still don't understand why I had issues with NSConfinementConcurrencyType –  Peter Warbo Dec 28 '12 at 22:47

Your fetch request is passed to the parent which runs on another thread main queue (NSMainQueueConcurrencyType). Since NSConfinementConcurrencyType needs to be on the same queue you get the error. According to iOS5 release notes, NSConfinementConcurrencyType cannot be nested to a parent (read under Nested Managed Object Contexts). developer.apple.com/library/mac/#releasenotes/DataManagement/… –  Alex L Dec 29 '12 at 0:37

We use NSPrivateQueueConcurrencyType on our background threads and still have this problem. I think wrapping the fetches in -performBlockAndWait: might still be necessary. –  Clay Bridges May 8 '13 at 14:11

this may not give the full picture but this is the approach I took

Every managed object requires its own thread. On the same thread you can use the same managed object over and over. But not on the same queue. (this was a misconception I leaned about) the background queue can have many different threads and the MOC needs to be unique for each thread.

here is the method I used.

You've created an object that keeps a mapping of known threads and MOCs and returns the correct MOC for the current thread. Do I understand that correctly? If so, what's the advantage of this versus, say, Alex L's NSPrivateQueueConcurrencyType solution? Well this, to the best of my understanding, follows the convention advised by the writers of the core data infrastructure. And I was informed that the documentation is (or maybe was.) incorrect in having you assume that a single "Queue" uses the same MOC when in fact it is a single thread of which a single queue may have many. This allows you to not only use multiple threads, but if you look. it also notifies all existing threads that something changed. Which will allow you to respond to those changes (NSFetchedResultsController responds to these changes) –  The Lazy Coder Dec 29 '12 at 7:06
