So I have a few different Activities that use a SimpleCursorAdapter for a ListView. My main concern right now would be memory leaks and whatnot. I need to make sure that the cursor is closed when it is supposed to be.

I noticed that my app crashes when I go to re-run the code after I've made changes due to a nullpointerexception.

Can someone take a look at my code for one of my activities and tell me if there are issues with the cursor not being closed properly? Or any other issues you see that may cause memory leaks or ANR?

If you want to be sure that your cursor are handled correctly according to your activity lifecylce, I suggest using

startManagingCursor()

method.

According to the documentation:

This method allows the activity to take care of managing the given Cursor's lifecycle for you based on the activity's lifecycle. That is, when the activity is stopped it will automatically call deactivate() on the given Cursor, and when it is later restarted it will call requery() for you. When the activity is destroyed, all managed Cursors will be closed automatically

However, the new commonly suggested approach is to use CursorLoader, but I am afraid that you can't if you are just using plain sqllite

Well, technically you are using deprecated code when you prefer using a sqllite helper over a content provider. The reason for startmanaging cursor to be deprecated was to favor loaders (and then content providers) over dbhelpers. So, as I said before, the preferred approach would be to use a content provider AND a cursorloader. Check here for details stackoverflow.com/questions/9771582/… –  fedepaol Dec 28 '12 at 23:08

I ended up just making the cursor a global and calling cursor.close() in an onDestroy() @Override.
