I am trying to write a basic, database in Java. It's for the learning aspect and I have researched this question very thoroughly and not found any suitable replies either on stack overflow or via Google. I just want to have the most basic SQL queries only the needed ones which in this case are SELECT, INSERT and UPDATE. I want to learn more about both Java's advanced features and a little bit about how databases work under the hood. The only more advanced issue here is the concept of security. I already have a plan for login, but am fairly clueless when it comes to more specific authorization for particular database resources. Thanks for any assistance and it would be extremely helpful for any and all resources to be either internet based or directly provided in the response/comment. I haven't seen any good responses online, but I have seen plenty of questions.

NOTE: I made it a bit too vauge I guess, but I am asking more about the implementation of a very very basic framework for parsing the querys. The other real issue that I have not seen addressed is how to map the SELECT operation onto the data itself in a slightly more efficient way than a full table search.

This is not a duplicate of that question in anyway. This question deals in the concrete implementation of simple user authorization in a relational database and query parser. The "duplicate" questions cover a broad idea of this question. I am asking for concrete information.

Actually, ACID transactions, referential integrity, transaction isolation etc. are far more complex than security. Also, how the predicates are processed is tricky (aggregates, aliases etc.). Not sure quite why you'd want to reinvent this wheel. –  Jeff Watkins Dec 29 '12 at 0:31
    
I am not implementing ACID transactions and the other more complex concepts as this was really just for the parsing and data structures. I have seen the article and while appearing to be a duplicate, this is a more specific question asking for solid advice at least on managing security. –  modwizcode Dec 29 '12 at 1:24

I don't know what writing a database in Java means. Do you mean you'd like to write a relational database engine in Java?

You'll need a lot of fundamentals, none of which you've mentioned:

  1. A SQL parser to parse and validate SQL statements.
  2. A solid background in the data structures used to store information (B-trees).
  3. A good understanding of how to map SQL statements into operations on those data structures.

I have already seen that page in my prior research. The problem with that article was that it links to SQLite just like everything else. I don't need to write SQLite, I just want help with a framework for the queries and packet handlers. Which is more specific to java. Thats the real goal of this project. –  modwizcode Dec 29 '12 at 1:26
