I am developing a simulation game and I am very new to game development techniques of achieving things.I have the following situation:

Please note that the red arrows are the directions that AI agents are moving in

Now I am trying to figure out the best way to allow AI random movement where collisions would not happen (I already have a method which is checking if the next move will collide with the agents in the area based on radius of the agents size,however I am not sure what to do if the collision will happen i.e how should I change the movement angle accordingly).The real issue is with picking movement angles that avoid collisions with other agents and have a nice random movement.

For example: As seen in the picture there is an agent in black surrounded by yellow agents,how could the agent pick the next angle which would move it out of the way of yellow agents and avoid collision.

So I am looking for suggestions as to how I could implement this.Help is much appreciated and thanks in advance!

Note the agents use velocity vector to update the position which is calculated from the movement angle and speed constant.

I can give you an idea, how I would approach it.

So first you can think of choosing a direction of agents as a picking an angle expressed in radians. So the value would be between 0 (included) and 2 * Pi (excluded) - that is - whole circle. Now you could calculate which directions other agents are (let assume that we care only about agents, that are not farther away than given x - that should be easy to compute based on coordinates). Once we have that list of agents in question, we can figure for every each of them angle in relation to original agent. Then we can "black out" that area of available circle - the closer the agent the bigger the amount. If you repeat that for all agents. Your circle now look something like that:

----XXXX---XXXX----XXX-----

where XXX correspond to blacked out areas (ones that will likely result in collision), whereas remaining ones will correspond to safe areas. Now you can just randomly pick safe area, get corresponding angle in radians and move your agent. That is actually kind of interesting problem, if you take into consideration current direction of an agent, you can make them pick closest safe direction resulting in nice smooth evasive manoeuvres. :)

Good luck, if you have trouble computing angles try handling each quarter of circle separately, that is, 1) dx>0, dy>0, 2) dx>0, dy<0, etc. –  Sebastian K Dec 30 '12 at 23:28

If you want to have a list of possible moves, then what you can do, is pick a step (e.g 0.1) and then move trough the whole circle and add items that are not blacked out. Then you can just randomly pick one of your list. Maybe? –  Sebastian K Jan 2 '13 at 18:49
    
Yea,that was the idea I was going about to store them in an ArrayList, I'm just wondering if it wont slow down the movement operation as a whole with many agents (each time having to update their possible moves).Of-course they wont have to check every time, only when a collision is to happen or bounds were reached. –  Tohmas Jan 2 '13 at 21:17
