I have a function in which a bunch of stuff is drawn into an offscreen buffer. At the end of the function, it calls InvalidateRect. For some reason, sometimes it redraws halfway through the function, causing a flicker. Here's the code for the function:

What is causing the flicker?

  1. Ensure that you handle the WM_ERASEBKGND message and return TRUE, this will prevent the window base class from drawing the background.

  2. Instead of calling InvalidateRect at the end of your drawing routine, place your drawing code inside a WM_PAINT message handler, this ensures your drawing code is called whenever the window is being repainted.

That was it. I had something like BitBlt(hdc, 0, 0, 518, 401, hdcmem, 0, 0, SRCCOPY); in DrawLevelNumber. Thanks! –  Brian Gradin Jan 3 '13 at 6:08
    
@BrianGradin Alternatively you can just register NULL for the background brush of the window class before registering it. You'll still be sent WM_ERASEBKGND, but you can safely let DefWindowProc() process it, which, upon discovering no background brush, does nothing. Either method works, and is ultimately a matter of preference. See this question for a little more detail. –  WhozCraig Jan 4 '13 at 12:44
