A. Add the permission inside your manifest

     <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.DEVICE_POWER" />

B. You can use the

ACTION_SHUTDOWN

Intent which is broadcast when the phone is about to shutdown. The documentation says:

Apps will not normally need to handle this, since the foreground activity will be paused as well.

In other words, if you respond to all the lifecycle events for your Activity appropriately, there's no need to use this unless you really want to do something specific related to shutdown.

The ACTION_SHUTDOWN Intent was introduced in API Level 4, in other words it'll only be sent on phones running Android 1.6 or later.

You'll trap the Broadcast with a BroadcastReceiver. It will look something like this:

 public class ShutdownReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver {

 @Override
 public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
    //Insert code here
   }

 }

You'll also need an entry in your Manifest like the following:

 <receiver android:name=".ShutdownReceiver">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.ACTION_SHUTDOWN" />
</intent-filter>
</receiver>

Depending on what you're doing, another option would be to use the

ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED

Intent which is sent when the phone is restarted.


Specific to some phones(htc)

In addition to

ACTION_SHUTDOWN, you should add

android.intent.action.QUICKBOOT_POWEROFF

to your intent-filter.

ACTION_SHUTDOWN

isn't always broadcast on some HTC devices (e.g. the Evo 4g). To be more specific, if you choose Restart, ACTION_SHUTDOWN is broadcast, but if you choose Power Off,

QUICKBOOT_POWEROFF

is broadcast instead.

But I gradually found out that protected intent | sytem intent can be implement using java code only::

Here is the code looks alike::

I added the code you have provided but somehow not working. I added Receiver and defined it in manifest as well. I run the app and I simply close the emulator & also tested with power off button on the emulator but not working. Do I need to add any permission for this? I also read the documentation and there its written that -- This is a protected intent that can only be sent by the system. –  Scorpion Jan 3 '13 at 6:38

I added the permission but still not getting the shut down event. I am adding the code snippet in my question for the reference. I am having doubt that it will only work for system apps from this line "This is a protected intent that can only be sent by the system". –  Scorpion Jan 3 '13 at 6:57

I know this is old but I have a partial solution which follows the material above. At least the shutdown event is called and I am able to do that unique item on shutdown, but there is a side effect that I don't understand; a memory leak. In one sense it IS shutdown so the memory leak has no drastic effects but I don't understand it and that is a bother.

In any case I have no additions in the manifest.xml with respect to this BroadcastReceiver. It is completely defined in code.

In my main activity a define a class as above

private class ShutDownReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver
{

    @Override
    public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent)
    {
        if(Intent.ACTION_SHUTDOWN.equals(intent.getAction()))
        {
            Log.i(TAG, "System shutting down");
            context.stopService(new Intent(context, BluetoothPanService.class));
        }
    }

}

In the main activity's onResume() method I instantiate and register the receiver:

{
    super.onResume();
    Log.i(TAG, "Measurement Log Activity has Resumed.");

    IntentFilter filter = new IntentFilter(Intent.ACTION_SHUTDOWN);
    mReceiver = new ShutDownReceiver();
    registerReceiver(mReceiver, filter);
}

('mReceiver' is defined as a private class variable of the main activity)

And finally in the main activity's onPause() I unregister the receiver

    super.onPause();
    Log.i(TAG, "Measurement Log Activity has Paused.");
    this.unregisterReceiver(mReceiver);
}

When the phone is powered off the ACTION_SHUTDOWN event is indeed signaled and the service is stopped; it's onDestroy() method is signaled and a message to a remote MQTT broker service is published indicating that the client is no longer connected. The remote broker is getting the message so I know it is working.

However, after that all hell break loose and it's mainly because I cannot stop my service from re-starting (even though I set START_NOT_STICKY in the onStartCommand method). But at this time besides getting a lot of red error lines in logcat, the ACTION_SHUTDOWN is heeded and the action I need to invoke gets done.

Hope this helps someone (who perhaps isn't dealing with shutting down a service).
