I have implemented a Read-Through cache using AppFabric by extending DataCacheStoreProvider.

Once the data has been retrieved from the datasource, a DataCacheItem is created for return by calling this static method:

DataCacheItemFactory.GetCacheItem(Key, CacheName, DataObject, Tags)

My problem is that there is no opportunity to specify the timeout (as in expiry) for the cached item.

This means that to implement a read-through cache, you are forced to always use the default item timeout for every cached item, which is rubbish.

Is this true, or is there some way of setting the timeout when implementing a read-though cache design-pattern using AppFabric?

EDIT: For reference, the process I am implementing is described in more depth here.

EDIT: The only way that I can see to achieve this is to define a separate named cache (in order to provide differing default lifespan values) for each distinct timeout you need to use, which is ridiculous and completely outweighs the advantages of adopting this design pattern in the first place.

The DataCacheItem that is produced does indeed have a timeout property but it's read-only. –  crane101 Jan 3 '13 at 16:35

Timeout is specified at named cache level, So managing it for each cache item is not possible through AppFabric. Scenario where we need expiry 1. Cached item can be changed in after some time. 2. Cached item may be not used after some time etc. To achieve this you can make use of SqlDependency or FileDependency to remove the cached item. –  AshokD Jan 8 '13 at 8:14
    
AshokD: The default timeout is specified at cache level yes, but the DataCache.Put method will take a timeout parameter allowing you to specify an individual lifespan per item. However, this method is used in the cache-aside model, and Microsoft do not appear to have provided the same degree of flexibility in the equivalent method for the read-through cache design pattern. –  crane101 Jan 8 '13 at 15:01
    
@crane101 yes, it's just a way to override the cache config. It is recommended to have the same topology of data in a cache ; so timeout is consistent. Read-Through feature is just a way to reload something that was is cache. I'm sure you will find a way to mix it with cache aside. –  Cybermaxs Jan 10 '13 at 17:44
