I am running a python process on an Amazon EC2 Ubuntu instance that processes a large data file. Initially everything is going fine and I do not notice any continuous rise in RAM or CPU usage. Then, after processing a part of the input data, the process runs out of memory and dies. dmesg -T produces the following, which does not tell me anything:

Is there a way to profile the process to figure out what's going on and what causes the sudden surge in RAM usage? Thx

@Steven -- too complicated to set up with all the infrastructure around it; production code must run on instance; not even sure the error would be reproduced if run locally – I Z Jan 3 '13 at 20:58

I've used Dowser to help track down memory use in one of my projects. It runs as a simple web interface and produces a lot of information that will hep you track down the issue.

You cannot, but you could still use it, but use a ssh tunnel to access the site without opening up any port to the public on your instance. – sean Jan 3 '13 at 19:42
