I am getting an error in the subprocess module while the running the code below. The arguments horizontaldeviation and vertical deviation are floats and I am running a binary .exe file carddetector that takes command line float arguments.

When I change all arguments to string (instead of float or int), it seems to work. Just wanted to understand why that is the case. –  vkaul11 Jan 4 '13 at 22:49

I don't think you can call a subprocess with arguments other than string, because essentially it just calls program via the operating system's command line. –  XORcist Jan 4 '13 at 22:57

Following up on möter's point, instead of defining args manually, define the string you are trying to call, and then use import shlex; args = shlex.split(command_string). Then args will be a list of strings, and you'll avoid this error. –  unutbu Jan 4 '13 at 23:09
