I have a very simple application, the main threat starts 2 AsyncTasks. The 2 AsyncTasks are almost the same, this is the code of one of my AsyncTasks:

private class waitPlayer extends AsyncTask<Integer, Integer, Void> {

            try {
                Thread.sleep(200);
            } catch (InterruptedException e) {
                       CreateLog.addToLog(e.toString);

            return null;

        protected void onPostExecute(Void result) {

            super.onPostExecute(result);
            setCanPlay(true, lastPlayerPlayed);
        }

        @Override
        protected void onProgressUpdate(Integer... progress) {

        }
    }

The only thing the AsyncTask does is waiting 200ms and after it's done it calls an method. The method will call the AsyncTask again. The other AsyncTask is almost the same, it only waits 3000ms and calls another method.

The problem is that after I added the second AsyncTask my Application got very slow. It freezes a few seconds when the AsyncTasks are running. My Logcat says is full of Garbage Collector notifications.

My phone is not freezing, only the Application. I have about 200mb of free RAM.

How are you calling/starting both of your AsyncTasks? What is setCanPlay()? You say the second task is different from the one posted. What is the second one doing? –  shanet Jan 6 '13 at 18:45
    
I recommend a Handler, too, like Raghav suggested. Also don't start with the debugger, as the debugger will significantly reduce the performance of your app. –  WarrenFaith Jan 6 '13 at 18:51

if you wish to do something in the near future , you can use a handler or a timer .

example :

this will run the runnable in about 2 seconds :

new Handler().postDelayed(new Runnable() {...} , 2000);

asyncTask are used only for small tasks , which you don't care about the order for when they are finished and don't care how many threads are handling them .

as an example , they can be used to download small images from the internet , and be cancelled in case they are used in a listview that is being scrolled too fast .

in any case , we will need to see some more code of yours : what is "setCanPlay" ? and where is the call to the other asyncTask ?

There is a monumental stupidity in AsyncTask. Quoting from the dev docs:

"When first introduced, AsyncTasks were executed serially on a single background thread. Starting with DONUT, this was changed to a pool of threads allowing multiple tasks to operate in parallel. Starting with HONEYCOMB, tasks are executed on a single thread to avoid common application errors caused by parallel execution.

"If you truly want parallel execution, you can invoke executeOnExecutor(java.util.concurrent.Executor, Object[]) with THREAD_POOL_EXECUTOR."

This means that sleeping in AsyncTask::doInBackground will prevent all other AsyncTasks from running, until the sleep completes. You could well be preventing other background activity (perhaps system library activity) from completing.

This is NOT monumental stupidity. If you want tasks to run in parallel, just use executeOnExecutor (as you say). For the most part, though, people expect that if AT1.execute() is called before AT2.execute(), then AT1 will run before AT2. As they found out, between DONUT and HONEYCOMB, on a raw ThreadPoolExecutor, they don't necessarily do that. –  G. Blake Meike Jun 7 '13 at 16:17
    
If you came to the party on Donut or later, and wrote your stuff correctly, it was a bit of a shock to find it broken on Honeycomb. I suppose, the same is true if you came to android on an earlier version, and found your stuff broken by Donut. Do two offsetting stupidites make an un-stupidity? Not sure. It still seems a bit strange to me that an Android developer should take it upon themself to unilaterally decide that everyone who was using the API was doing it wrong. –  Robin Davies Jul 10 '13 at 0:45
