# Dividing an Array of Dates Into Contiguous Blocks [duplicate]

I have an array of dates which is obtained from a mySQL query. I need to divide the array into multiple arrays so that the dates in each array are contiguous.

I need to be able to split that into

Finally I will be able to print

How can I do that? I haven't a clue where to start.

That was pretty much the "complete working answer". Just a few little things and it flies: I didn't notice the \$out = "": line at first, so I re-invented that wheel myself. date("M d" etc in the last \$out .= line gave me back-to-front dates and always two-character. Changing to date("j M" etc solved that. The list of dates ended with a comma, so I used rtrim to tidy that up. –  TrapezeArtist Jan 8 '13 at 0:24

There was one other issue I found once I started to use the solution. It didn't accomodate a single date that was not contiguous on either side. I just had to add and extra bit to the if...else routine to take account of that. The code can be seen in operation on (for example) www.littlehotels.co.uk/spain/noves.php. I cant help you with acutal code, but you could do something like this:

• find start and endpoints of the ranges
• count steps in between (1 step = 1 day)
• use mktime (or DateTime or strftime) to calc the end date based on start date + step days)
• print out as you like.

Note: I have not tested the above code so it may contain typos.

I am simply iterating over each day in the array, and determining if it is a continuous day from the previous day. If it is, then it's added to the same group, if it is not, then it is added to a different array index. You may need to sort the dates after this using some sort of sorting function from php. Then iterate over the array groups to determine date range.

It's worth noting that if the dates go over the month though, it'll say something like `29 - 5 Mar` - 29th of what is not defined so I would do `5 Mar - 8 Mar` if I were you.

Note this is handling the years correctly. That's why the output looks a bit odd. Might want to account for that in the output.

All dates you have are in the same year. You could convert each date into the number of the day in that year.

Then you would have an array of numbers. For that array you can just do like outlined here:

Another way would be to calculate the next date based on the previous on and then compare it with the next date in the array. If both equal, extend the current time-span, if not, create a new time-span. Reduce the array to time-spans then:
