After a few hours research into XSLT, I am admitting defeat! I need to fix a large number of .xlf XLIFF translation files that have returned to us mangled from an unnamed translation tool. Ideally I would apply the XSL transform to them using a batch tool.

Below is a snippet of one of the XLIFF files:

Notice the target tag in the third trans-unit node. The mrk tags should contain the text nodes that have now become siblings (compared to the earlier seg-source tag, which is still correct), messing up the structure.

Therefore I am trying to identify any mrk tags that do not contain text nodes, and move the following text node back into them.

Here is the desired result:

I would normally do this in Perl with LibXML or similar, but I'm sure that this is a simple task for XSLT. I've searched for a similar solution, but couldn't find anything that I could make work.

One other point to note - although 'pretty-printed' here, the final body node definition is all on one line.

Have you tested this? It will work except that the output will contain extra whitespace, including a newline, after the text, which may not be acceptable. Also, any correctly structured target/mrk tags will also be modified by moving the inter-mrk whitespace into the text node. Judicious use of normalize-space should fix the problem. –  Jim Garrison Jan 9 '13 at 4:26

According to my test in OxygenXML it modifies both correct and incorrect target/mrk (there were no incorrect examples in the supplied input) and includes the trailing newline and indentation whitespace from the following line (part of the same text node). You have a well-structured solution, it just needs a little tweak to be 100% correct. +1 –  Jim Garrison Jan 9 '13 at 4:45
    
I'd propose changing this: following-sibling::text() to this: following-sibling::node()[1]/self::text(). This way it's ensured to only grab the text that's immediately after each <mrk>. –  JLRishe Jan 9 '13 at 14:04
