I want to have some columns from some tables. I have a problem with the user. The userId can be 0, but I want to have it returned as null. When I do it with this simple union statement, the result looks like this:

     JOIN ios_user u

     AND w.partnerid_fk = p.partnerid 
     AND a.userid_fk = u.userid 
     AND p.code =  'DEMO6003'

Expected result:

Real result:

Problem: The statement returns a row for each worker that is registered in the database. How can I fix it?

If you have multiple ios_worker records, then this is the expected behavior. Are you trying to just return the MAX? –  sgeddes Jan 9 '13 at 21:34
    
Your expectation is false. Even if you had a one to many scenario you are forcing uniqueness with the "union". If you take the records with a p.code of 'DEMO6003' and the records with a userid_fk of 0 you will have three distinct workerIDs; this has to be the case. To know how you could cull it down better we'd need to know more about the reason you're doing this and as @njk said, know the table schemas. –  Love2Learn Jan 9 '13 at 21:35
    
My question is why are you expecting only 1 line? UNION combines distinct rows from multiple queries. It looks like you have 3 distinct rows (workerid is different in all three rows). –  Sam Jan 9 '13 at 21:42

Your second query still needs the join criteria applied:

FROM ios_appointments a 
     JOIN ios_user u
     JOIN ios_worker w 
     JOIN ios_partners p 
WHERE a.workerid_fk = w.workerid 
     AND w.partnerid_fk = p.partnerid 
     AND a.userid_fk = u.userid 
     AND a.userid_fk = 0
