I need to store an extremely large vector array on a file. The size could be as large as 1e48. How to store this in a file and then read a set of data (say 8 elements at a time) sequentially from it, manipulate, and store manipulated data back in the file. The array elements are doubles/ even bigger decimals. The code could be in Python. Does any one have any suggestions?

1e48 ?? And what storage medium do you intend to use ?? Mine contain only some 1e12 bytes... Hope you have some 1e33 years ahead of you to store everything :) – X.L.Ant Jan 10 '13 at 14:57

@JonClements : That must be something like the number of atoms in the solar system. That being said, I'd like to try the Chuck-Norris-y computer capable of dealing with that kind of data :) – X.L.Ant Jan 10 '13 at 16:11

I'm voluntarily putting aside the fact that you have a really big dataset. A good (actually not so bad) strategy would be NOT to load the entire file using for example :

array = f.readlines()

but rather play with the cursor and load 8 elements at a time :

line = f.readline()
while line:
    #Do stuff here

Here I'm assuming that you have each element on a different line.
