I was capturing webpage viewer logs based on the PHP code below...

But every now and then, the logs would get corrupted and look like this...

It may be worth noting that I'm using using http://www.easyjquery.com to get the location information from the IP address.

So, various people recommended using an SQL database for the logging, instead of the flat text log. With those recommendations, I was able to set up said SQL database. I was able to write 7 records in 1 second (as fast as I could hit F5), without issue.

The PHP code in use is as follows...

There is one problem, though. My flat text logs seem to be capturing more records than the SQL logs.

The flat text log is producing...

You can see that, in just a couple of minutes, there are differences. Over the course of a couple of hours, the differences could be in the hundreds.

There was no corruption, in this particular flat text log, so I don't see how it could be wrong. That would point to an issue with the SQL logs. I looked in my PHP error log for possible issues and didn't see anything obvious (I just searched for the page in question and looked at those errors).

Are there any ideas about why SQL wouldn't be capturing records that the flat text log is? In my code, the SQL logging comes directly after the flat text logging (maybe putting SQL before flat text would produce inverse results?).

I think you're probably right on in thinking it's a concurrency issue. You might look into using a simple logging framework like kLogger which has already sorted out these issues. – ithcy Jan 10 '13 at 20:03

There's a lot of things that could be going on interrupting the script, especially since you are relying on client-side code (the jquery location by ip script) to generate the log content. If you are using these logs to generate analytics, is there a reason you wouldn't use a database or at least save them as key-value serials (JSON)? – DeaconDesperado Jan 10 '13 at 20:04

likely a concurrency issue. use flock or just use a database server like mysql and be done with the whole mess while simultaneously gaining robustness and functionality for very minimal overhead. – goat Jan 10 '13 at 21:16
    
@DeaconDesperado Is there a non-client-side way of getting location information from an IP address? Also, I assume using a database is the way to go. I just wasn't sure if it would over-come the concurrency (I like that word) issue. The reason that I'm doing it the way that I am is that sometime similar was already in-place, when I started working with this website. I've queried a database, before, but I've never written anything to a database with PHP. For reference, I'm on a Windows server with MSSQL. – doubleJ Jan 11 '13 at 1:38

@doubleJ I got you. A database, depending on the server/driver combination, should take care of the concurrency issues in the form of transactions. There are server side geolocation api's available out there that utilize the value of $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'], not sure if they would fit the bill for your purposes though. – DeaconDesperado Jan 11 '13 at 3:05

As far as I can see you can either use file locking, or syslog. Since you seem to want to have your app write uninterrupted blocks of text I think locking would be advisable.

You can also use this slightly more complex algorithm to do a random 'backoff' wait similar to what TCP and CSMA/CD use to avoid congestion.

If unable to get a lock the script gradually waits longer and longer periods of time between lock attempts until the time defined in $max_wait is exceeded.

After writing all this I'm thinking you might just want to consider inserting all of this into a database, and if you require a log file then have a cron job run once per day to write the file out in one go, and optionally empty the table.

I don't, specifically, need a log file. It's just there because that's what's being written. If it was in a database, I could just query from it. – doubleJ Jan 11 '13 at 1:39
