I'm a C++ beginner (3-4 month) and I'm trying to do lean about windows hooking. I had a bug with a DLL that I'm trying to inject and after a while I realized that my DllMain is not being called! I looked at almost every thread on StackOverflow and can't figure out my problem. I found that out by intializing a variable to 5, changing it to 1 in DllMain and I output the variable in a function. The variable never change. Here is the code:

FYI, the first argument to DllMain should be HINSTANCE, not HANDLE, but as they're both typedef void * I don't think that could be causing your problem. Is DllMain being exported? –  Harry Johnston Jan 13 '13 at 22:55

Follow these steps to make a working example (This is for visual studio):

  • Create a new console application;
  • Check Dll;
  • Place this in dllmain.cpp:

  • Compile the code, make sure it's on release mode;
  • Create a new console application;
  • Check empty project;
  • Create a new file with the name main.cpp;
  • Copy this in the file:

  • Build the project, make sure it's on release mode;
  • Copy your DLL that you made in the release folder from your console application;
  • Run the program.

It workes here. I get a MessageBox with test and 1 time with loaded. You can compare this code with yours. I hope you find the problem.

Thanks for the answer. But that unfortunatly doesn't solve my problem. As we can see in my first post I have no trouble accessing my function InstallHook and UninstallHook. The problem is that I cannot access the DllMain. From msdn "If the specified module is a DLL that is not already loaded for the calling process, the system calls the DLL's DllMain function with the DLL_PROCESS_ATTACH value." I see a WinMain and a cout in the same program. Please explain the project types that you've created.

Thanks, I will take a look at the project. The reason why I have a WinMain is because I was trying out to test my hook while a window is open because I read in another StackOverflow problem that sometime you can have a hardtime debugging the DllMain from a console app. But before that everything was in my main function but the result was the same. –  Michael Villeneuve Jan 11 '13 at 17:43

I just received a badge for a "popular question" and tought I'd go back on my question for futur users that might encounter the same problem.

The answer of @Laurence is good. It's working but it wasn't solving my issue. Why? It was all about the compiler. At the time of the question, I was using Cygwin with Netbeans. The moment I switch to visual studio 2012 everything worked. 100% the same code, just a different software/compiler.

Cygwin, IMO, is a monstrosity. Oh, it serves a useful purpose for corner cases, but should always be a last resort: if you're running UNIX software, run it on UNIX, in a VM if necessary. Cygwin is particularly poorly-suited for Windows-specific programming, e.g., sysadmin tasks (such as formatting disks) and hacking (such as hooking another process); I'm not saying these are impossible from Cygwin, but you really need to understand what you're doing. –  Harry Johnston Dec 12 '13 at 20:30
    
Visual studio adds implicitly something like: extern "C"{ __declspec (dllexport) BOOL APIENTRY DllMain (HINSTANCE,DWORD, LPVOID); } so DllMain is called, but the other compilers don't. You should add it manually. –  slaviber Jan 6 at 19:27
