I'm fairly new to C, and I'm trying to write a utility to open all event handlers which handle EV_KEY events, and give me a list of their file descriptors (while they're still open). The function which does all of that appears to be functioning properly, when when I try to loop over the file descriptors, I'm getting a smashed stack error. I tried compiling each C file with gcc's -Wall flag to find what might be causing the problem, but it hasn't helped me. Here's my code:

Shouldnt that be sizeof(int)*32?? also AFAIK return value of strncmp function should be compared to 0 or 1 or -1 depending on your requirement –  Recker Jan 11 '13 at 6:53
    
For the strncmp, if it is 0, that means it matched and I want to continue, thus !strcmp() gives me "true" if the strings match. –  Haz Jan 11 '13 at 7:00
    
Also, when you have a pointer to malloc'd memory, doesn't it know how large the memory chunk is? I thought malloc added additional information to that memory that includes the size of the allocated memory. –  Haz Jan 11 '13 at 7:03

@Haz: malloc "knows", your C code doesn't. sizeof(fds) in the calling function will return sizeof(int*) - it's evaluated at compile-time only. That trick only works on real arrays (and VLAs). –  Mat Jan 11 '13 at 7:05

The ioctl has the wrong size:

ioctl(fd, EVIOCGBIT(EV_KEY, EV_MAX), results);

change that line to:

ioctl(fd, EVIOCGBIT(EV_KEY, sizeof(results)), results);

You are indirectly writing outside results’ bounds by telling EVIOCGBIT that it has EV_MAX bytes to fill while it only has EV_MAX÷8, thus your stack is trashed. Due to the way stack smashing detection works it can only be detected once you return.

To get you convinced, have a look at the comment in drivers/input/evdev.c, it says:

I don't think this is the problem. If you look at the runtime output, it has already returned the file descriptors by the time the stack smashing is detected. –  Haz Jan 11 '13 at 15:14

A stack smashing error will not be shown until a function call returns. What has happened is the wrong size has caused part of the stack to be overwritten. When a function returns it checks the stack canary to see if the stack is still valid. As the memory has been overwritten it is not and a smashed stack error occurs. –  Steve Jan 11 '13 at 19:10
