I want to search text and return lines that include a minimum set of arguments. The simplest example I can think of is searching a dictionary for words that contain at least 5 of 10 options. If I had the set "co or di na te di re ct io ns", I would return any word that contained exactly 5 of the options. Results would include directions and coordinate.

First step would be to reduce the dictionary if possible (letters, at least half of options..) At that point my solutions were 1. use the list to generate all possibilities into a potential word-list and search linux.words 2. iterate through linux.words, and increment a counter if a grep returns each element, then return results counter>n

Is there an easier way to do this? I was hoping there were something cool in perl that I wasn't aware of (I new to perl).

you mean, that you want find lines, where minimum of options (words that you want much) is reached? –  gaussblurinc Jan 11 '13 at 19:14

This will count the occurrences:

++$c while /(?=co|or|di|na|te|di|re|ct|io|ns)/g;

The pattern is easily built (join '|', map quotemeta, ...).
