I have 2 Entities that I am trying to set up using a @OneToOne relationship.

I am using Oracle 11g as the database and User Table has a generated ID via a sequence. This Id from the user table is the Primary Key and Foreign key in the UserProfile table.

So basically a User is mapped to 1 and only 1 User Profile and a User Profile maps back to only 1 User.

I have seeded data in my database and I can read User Object with a User Profile without problem. But when I try to insert a new User Object with a New UserProfile object in a transaction it fails with a Foreign Key Violation in my UserProfile table.

It seems to be a common problem out there with a @OneToOne with Shared primary key, but I can't see to find a answer that works. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I can see that the Id in USerProfile gets set correctly, just on the commit to the database it throws the violation. It almost seems like the UserProfile is being committed to the database before User. Is there a way to persist the User first without have to persist these objects separately?

Yes, trigger is present for the User Table. UserProfile table has no triggers as the primary key is a foreign key to the User table. I suspect that the UserProfile Object is trying to be persisted before the User object. But don't know how to correct it. –  Colin Moore Jan 15 '13 at 14:37
    
it is foreign key to refering table, but it is primary key to its own table. try to put triggers to the both sides. –  erencan Jan 15 '13 at 14:47
    
So the trigger on the UserProfile table will take the same id as the User table? In Hibernate, is there a way to not map the id on insert, and just let the database handle the id generation. Right now hibernate sets the id via a sequence on the User object (from the User sequence in my Oracle DB) –  Colin Moore Jan 15 '13 at 14:55

Your mapping is wrong. In a bidirectional asociation, one side is the owner of the association, and tells how the association is mapped. The other side is the inverse side, and just says "look at the other side for the mapping" using the mappedBy attribute.

Thanks for the reply. I made the adjustments that you suggested but it did not solve my problem. My problem is at the database level. In UserProfile my primary key is also a foreign key to the User Table (so they have a shared primary key). The exception I encounter is when hibernate tries to commit to the database, the foreign key violation is thrown (the parent are child are trying to be created in the same transaction. The foreign key constraint is in the user_profile table, and not in the user table, right? If not, then that's what the problem is. –  JB Nizet Jan 13 '13 at 22:29
    
Correct, my USER_ID in the UserProfile table is both a primary key and a foreign key to the ID in User table. I would assume hibernate would support the creation of both a User and UserProfile in the same transaction, maybe I am wrong? –  Colin Moore Jan 14 '13 at 10:58

The mappings you provided were correct, it did not fix my issue. My issue was at the database level, more specifically with my Trigger on the User table. My user class was mapping the Id of User using the Sequence from Oracle, but upon insert, this id was being overwritten by my Trigger (did not have a null check in my trigger). So the user would be persisted with a different Id that the Userprofile did not know about. So after fixing my Trigger everything is working now. Lesson - triple check the database ;-) –  Colin Moore Jan 16 '13 at 13:23
