i have this data model:

and i'm trying to execute this query:

select m.id from Metadata m left join m.preferenceMap p [where not important]

and eclipselink generates this SQL:

SELECT t0.ID FROM METADATA t0 LEFT OUTER JOIN METADATA_PREFERENCE t3 ON ((t3.METADATA_ID = t0.ID) AND (t1.ID = t3.PERSON_ID)), PERSON t2, SUBJECT t1 [where not important]

but this query generates an exception:

com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLSyntaxErrorException: Unknown column 't1.ID' in 'on clause'

i know about MySQL join precedence, so i need eclipselink to rewrite the query this way:

SELECT t0.ID FROM (METADATA t0, SUBJECT t1) LEFT OUTER JOIN METADATA_PREFERENCE t3 ON ((t3.METADATA_ID = t0.ID) AND (t1.ID = t3.PERSON_ID)), PERSON t2 [where not important]

how to do this???

Show the persistence.xml. You might need to add persistence property "eclipselink.target-database" and specify MySQL as the value –  Chris Jan 15 '13 at 12:31

It seems to be getting confused by join to the complex Map ElementCollection. Seems to be a bug, please log the bug and vote for it, also ensure you are using the latest patch release.

You could instead map the ElementCollection as a OneToMany to a Preference object that has a person and type. This would be a more straight forward model.

An inner join would also probably work, if you don't need an outer join (or perhaps use a sub-query if you need outer join semantics).

i'm using the latest patch. i like this kind of mapping for easy JSF controller operations and i'm currently using a subquery as a workaround (inner joins do work :)). however i'm logging this to eclipselink. thx! –  Michele Mariotti Jan 15 '13 at 14:50

eclipselink 2.5.0 (jpa 2.1) solves this bug.
