I have a Pyramid view that works a lot of the time, but some of the time it just eats up all my ram and gets my computer into page mode if I'm not quick enough to stop the server. I haven't included very much code here because I honestly don't know what code would be relevant and there is a lot of it... please feel free to ask me if you want any more info.

Here is how I return from the view:

 dRet = some_crazy_dictionary
 print('groovy')
 return dRet

And this is the kind of console output I get regardless of whether the view works or not

Some background:

  • the view makes use of mako rendering
  • the view makes use of an sqlite database as well as some pickled files that represent parts of a complex object hierarchy far too weird for sqlite
  • no other applications are accessing the sqlite database or the files
  • i'm using sqlalchemy

The console output suggests to me that the transaction sqlalchemy tells to commit upon the completion of a view is failing in a very demanding way.

Any theories as to why this would happen?

I'm running:

  • Python 3.2
  • sqlalchemy 0.7.8
  • Pyramid 1.3.3
  • Ubuntu 12.04

The sqlite database is running on the same machine - I'm still in development mode.

Using SystemMonitor I can see the amount of ram used by Python increase linearly.

EDIT: I'm taking a break from this piece of code for a while... I'' update this whith progress when it happens. Thanks for the comments

you could attach strace to the python process for a glimpse at what it's doing, or as a nuclear option, get a core dump and look for a pattern. but i'm not sure the COMMIT is the problem, since it appears to succeed. –  Eevee Jan 16 '13 at 8:55

Assuming you use SQLAlchemy in a standard way with Pyramid the fact that you see a COMMIT suggests that request processing has finished in your pyramid application and pyramid completes the transaction which triggers the commit. –  Wichert Akkerman Jan 16 '13 at 9:02
